This biting comedy about money, morality and marriage is still relevant today.
FORT WORTH, Texas (Aug. 28, 2025) – Hip Pocket Theatre continues its 49th season with Heartbreak House by George Bernard Shaw, directed by Emily Scott Banks. The show will be performed in the Hip Pocket Theatre’s amphitheatre at 1950 Silver Creek Road in Fort Worth. Showtimes are at 8:15 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, Sept. 5-28.
First mounted 105 years ago, George Bernard Shaw’s funny, sexy, prescient, timely “Heartbreak House – A Fantasia In the Russian Manner on English Themes” skewers a society that’s deeply distracted by a range of self-interests. The inhabitants of Heartbreak House dazzle, quip and equivocate in a world on the brink of seismic change. Societal beauties are focused on being beautiful, oligarchs are in government as unelected leaders, old men are with too-young women and bombs are falling with no one paying attention. Hip Pocket Theatre gives audiences a fresh new lens from which to view this classic work.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about this play, and how funny it is in its own brilliant way, how insightful about the foibles of a time that eerily mirrors our own, down to business moguls who buy their way into politics and then seek to dismantle the very structures of government,” said director Emily Scott Banks. “It asks big questions about what it means to live, and love, and have a heart and a soul. And it does all this in a ridiculously clever, sexy and poignant container.”
The cast includes Adia Best, Niko Corolla, Mark Duke Dalton, Aaron Dias, Cameron Martinez, Gary Payne, Kristi Ramos Toler, James Warila, and Kimberly Winnubst.
Tickets for all performances are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, military, teachers, first responders and students. They are available through Tickets to the City, on the Hip Pocket Theatre website or by calling 817-246-9775. (A Pay-What-You-Can Preview will be offered Thursday, Sept. 4. Tickets for this preview are only available at the door. The suggested donation is $15.)
The Box Office and The BackYard open at 7 p.m. Live music begins at 7:15 p.m. and is also performed after the show. Get the full music schedule here.
